Have you had a Bat inside your home this year? Do you get “a couple” every year or Bats in the winter? If so, you probably have a colony of bats living in your attic. Oh that’s OK some say, they keep the mosquito population down”. This is an urban legend. While some mosquitoes are eaten stomach contents and guano, of insect eating Bats, actually revealed mostly larger insects were their main staple, with moths leading the list. If you notice some small animal droppings on the deck or walkway, sweep it up, and it’s there again 2 days later, these are signs of a growing Bat Colony in your home. Although most bat guano is washed off the roof, into the gutters, so the majority of our customers aren't aware of the guano or the size of the bat colony.

Most bats in our area give birth around May 30, depending on the weather.  Any attempt to remove the colony during the birthing summer months will sentence the nursing young to a starvation death inside the home. Should I find the hole they are using, wait for them to fly out at night, and plug up the hole? Not all the bats in a colony leave at once. Many land around the hole to eat, defecate and just loaf during the night. During the summer months, when the parents are coming and going with food, it’s a good way to get bit. It’s very common to have Bats pour out of a hole, in our face, while we attempt exclusion. We surprise them, one lets out a shriek and they all abandon ship shrieking. Remember, if scratched or bitten while doing it yourself, be prepared for the expensive rabies shots because you are not going to catch the bat that touched you to test for rabies. If you are the bread winner for the family and you haven’t practiced holding a flashlight in your teeth on a 32 foot ladder with no fall restraint, at night, I wouldn't recommend it.

Many do-it-yourselves call us for “advice” on How to find and seal Bats out in the winter. They've caught 2 or 3 and released them outside then searched the attic for others, none were found.  Releasing Bats outside in the winter is a death sentence for the bat. Why risk letting a hungry animal or pet find and eat a possible diseased bat? If there was no contact with a human or pet, humanely euthanize the bat and safely dispose of it. The inside walls of homes have no insulation so warm air rises into the attic. The Bat Colony stack up in these areas huddled together, hibernating for the winter. During warm winter days they wake up and move down an inner wall with water pipes or electrical wires into the basement. They won’t hang from the attic rafters during the winter, its freezing up there. Our bat-removal-control service does remove individual bats, find and seal holes inside the home during the winter, but the entire Bat colony can’t be dealt with during the winter time. What ever you do, do not seal any holes on the outside of the home!
